Dr. Ebony Utley is the real deal. Her work, which examines the intersection of race and gender in popular culture, is a breath of fresh air in a media landscape that all too often marginalizes such analyses. The Utley Experience is an insightful, smart, well-rounded experience that will never leave you disappointed!
Dr. Utley made me look at how both males and females in hip hop struggle under the stereotypes that have been created for them as well as the ones that they create for themselves. Working in the entertainment industry, I try to change how women are viewed within the hip hop community. Knowing that I have an influential part in that makes me really acknowledge just how much Dr. Utley had an impact on me.
The first time I heard "The Message" or "Self Destruction," or when I really GOT Public Enemy is when I understood the Spirituality of Hip Hop. I have been searching for that feeling ever since but Dr. Utley reminded me that it never left.

The things Dr. Utley said about male dominance and being told you have to look a certain way to be successful are all situations that I have encountered in my own life. All in all I really enjoyed the speaker and I learned a lot about societal roles and how women enable sexism in their music by the way they sing about God and religion.

As a poet, performer and fellow academic, I appreciate Dr. Utley’s investment in dialogue. When it comes to intellectual business, Dr. Utley is not afraid to keep it “one-hunda’d,” as the phrase goes, and push you beyond your own capacities.
Dr. Ebony Utley was significant in the formation of my ability to critically examine discourse. As an English as a Foreign Language instructor in South Korea, I use the skills I learned from her to encourage my students to critically examine the east vs. west dichotomy, the otherization of foreigners in Korea, and the politics of being mandated to learn the English Language.

I hated rhetoric, but Dr. Utley completely changed my opinion. Everyone always says there’s that one college professor that really influences you, and Dr. Utley is that professor for me.
