Teaching Philosophy
All of my courses are rooted in social construction. In short, social construction destabilizes hierarchies and the standard sender, message, receiver model of communication by asserting that human beings are responsible for creating the worlds in which they live through the words that they speak into existence with each other.
I see the classroom as an interactive community that has the potential to build bridges with larger communities—particularly disadvantaged, misrepresented, and exploited communities. In my classes we always make contemporary applications and comparisons. My former students have done well with my teaching philosophy, but they will tell you to get the most out of my classes you have to show up and read the readings!
Letter of recommendation policy
I write letters of recommendation twice a year at the end of each semester. In order for me to write the best letter possible you must meet the following criteria:
- Request the letter near the end of the appropriate semester
- Email a description of the job, school, or scholarship for which you are applying
- Email any instructions for the letter as well as a copy of your application
- Email a resume and personal statement
Please keep in mind that if I do not think I can write a strong letter for you or if you cannot meet these criteria, I reserve the right to decline.
